I didn’t mean to suggest that people should be reckless with their own lives; just that, if you’re going to be reckless, make sure it’s not at the expense of others. And I agree that people should be fully aware of the potential consequences before diving into anything.

I’m all for people pursuing their dreams, even at a great deal of expense to some other aspects of their lives–but only if they are fully aware of these potential consequences and willing to go forward anyway.

Thus, I’d take some issue with your thought that: “Believing you can’t fail and plunging ahead with reckless abandon is fine if it’s only you that stands to suffer when things go pear-shaped,” as I think it’s important to consider your own situation and how your own (potentially reckless) actions might considerably worsen that situation.

Be conscious, always, of others, but don’t negate your own life in the process.
