The Disrupting the Rabblement manifesto: How to think for yourself, live your dreams, and piss off some zombies

After more than a month of outlining, writing, revising and promoting, my first manifesto is finally here. And it’s free!

[12/26/2011 UPDATE: The DtR Manifesto is still free, but now only available to my email subscribers. Sign up below.]

The manifesto is called Disrupting the Rabblement: How to think for yourself, live your dreams, and piss off some zombies, and it expands on the theme of this site. If you dig what I’ve been doing here, please check it out and let me know what you think. I truly believe it to be 44 pages of my best work, and I hope it serves you well.

I’d also really appreciate it if you could help spread the word so we can get this manifesto on the screens of as many people as possible. But maybe you should give it a read first to be sure it warrants the attention ;-)

  1. Way to go, Niall!! I see your life looks a lot like mine. Quitting the 9-to-5 in November 2010, packed everything up in a bag (yay minimalism!) and moved to your country of choice! I’m hopping a long-ass flight to Taipei, Taiwan tonight! Exciting times, my friend.

  2. All right, way to go Niall! I will be sure to tweet this for you. Congrats on finishing it up. I am excited to read it!

  3. Also Niall, I was thinking about this on my morning drive today.

I was remembering RAOC, and thought of something new we could do to disrupt the rabblement.

Along the lines of connecting with people, why not dedicate some time to someone, say on a weekend. To heelp them with just about … anything (that is friendly of course). Like painting a room, yardwork, or fixing a fence.

And help them out for free. Thoughts?

    • I like that idea, Darshan. I remember reading about a guy from Milwaukee (I think) who drove to Chicago for a weekend. Before he left, he posted an ad on the Chicago CraigsList saying he was available to help anyone who needed a man with a truck. I believe he helped build a neighborhood playground, hauled away some old bathroom junk for an elderly couple, and did a few other things. Nobody knew his name.

  4. Just wanted to mention Niall, I caught on to your blog well into your random acts of courage, or at least when you were nearly done. But they were none the less inspiring.

There’s this girl who I think is very pretty and studies at the library that I normally go to. To give you a brief summary, (and some of these might sound familiar):

    1. Made eye contact with her until she looked away

    2. Gathered my stuff, walked over to her table, and asked if I could sit with her.

    3. Asked her if she’d like to see a magic trick.

    4. Performed said magic trick.

    5. Struck up a conversation.

    6. Said bye when she left.

I had noticed her a couple times but had not said anything, and even today I felt a little shy but I said hey if Niall’s able to do it then I should try!

    Thanks again Niall.

    • Darshan, you just made my morning! Thanks for sharing your story. That’s exactly the type of participation I was hoping for with Random Acts of Courage. Brilliant stuff. Keep it up!

  5. Reading your manifesto was really enjoying and inspiring. Thank you for that :)

And I must say I love the cover with rotated ‘R’. It’s well matched.

  6. Great music Niall!

I would love to see you giving talks in schools – this is what our young people need, your kind of thinking – and they ain’t getting it, or not half enough of it anyways.

I’d love to be able to donate to sponsor you to go into schools…

  7. Hey Niall! Just wanted to stop by and let you know that my (almost) 9-year old son, Andy, LOVES the musical “out-tro” you did for this video. “Please do more!!!” begs your youngest fan… :)

And… “Please keep doing what you’re doing, and THANK YOU!!!” from Andy’s Mom!! ;)

  8. Hi Niall – I am all about pissing off zombies! Great video and hilarious ending.

I have always thought for myself – it’s not always an easy road, but it’s a better one.

Glad to have found your manifesto! Will download.

    Cheers,

    Tia

  9. Hi,

a really good manifesto. Well done, it is inspiring and it has some very good points.

I am curious about the courage stuff, this is something new and challenging.

I believe that you would do better without the ‘pissing’ and ‘hell’ words. They do not resonate with me anymore and I believe that they are unnecessary :)

    Keep going,

    Ioana

  10. Niall, I am a “zombie”, and possess all the negative attributes that you specified. I am a cynical arsehole, void of any dreams or aspirations, im mean/angry/bitter and have even, on two occasions in my life so far, headbutt a granny(two different ones, not the same one). I regularly take great pleasure in sneering(to myself, as i am a coward into the bargain) at people such as yourself who write blogs about themselves and their journey through life and wonder why…. why would you think anyone cares what you are doing or would benefit from following your…. acting the maggot around Europe….

I stumbled on your page about two hours ago and was delighted with myself, as I felt sure I was in for quiet a full and satisfying sneerathon…. To my dismay, I moved from one post to the next, almost seamlessly, without generating even one ounce of scorn or contempt. To my utter disgust and loathing of oneself, I have nothing but admiration and respect for you, your endeavors and your crusade against the living dead. All I can muster up right now is to say fair play to you. I wont be going leaving my 9-5 and joining you on your Odyssey or anything(primairily because I don’t have a job), but im sure you are a real inspiration to many people, and that the hundreds of young people that are being forced to emigrate each day would gain alot of confidence if they were to be introduced to your blog. Dont sell out.

    • Wow, this might be the best comment anyone’s ever left for me! Thanks so much, Cheese Lingo.

Also, you should be ashamed of yourself. No self-respecting zombie would ever concede that they respect the kind of life I’m trying to live :-P

  11. Glad I found you on Twitter! Just downloaded this and I’m looking forward to reading. And anything with “piss off some zombies” in the title has to be amazing. Looking forward to learning, and SHARING what I learn with my current and future clients!!!
