I noticed that Gmail mailto hijack recently. Helps me a bit, but I've also thought of another reason to avoid mailto links: Spam. Spambots harvest mailto links and send you all kinds of messages about penis size and erectile disfunction. Makes me cry.</description>

There are tons of Firefox extensions and userscripts that hijack mailto links and use Gmail instead of your desktop app, but even that doesn't help me because I use Gmail Apps For My Domain (or whatever they're calling it now).</description>
